Marathon Complete

All wrapped up with a week to go, managed to make the lifestyle disruptions work for me, with Starship being a bit of a hub for activity. Still time to get any donations in to push me to do more this long weekend.

There & Back Again

Another couple of small additions to the total, from making a supply run to the city and back while the others are in Starship.
At least it was nice weather.

Walk N Save

I did promise early on that I was not going to include 'normal' walking such as taking our daughter to school. But as the others are in Starship atm, I needed to make a grocery trip myself, which normally I would be inclined to spend just a bit more to qualify for delivery, but instead it made for a pleasant afternoon walk. Though I did forget how sore your arms can get when carrying a ~6kg bag back home...

Bonus points

Bumped up the numbers a bit more yesterday evening after already logging the morning walk. Unfortunately now we've had to take our daughter in to Starship. That does mean I'll be walking to the train and home from the bus stop, though, and you bet I'll be counting it. On the plus side, it may mean I get more km logged than otherwise. Silver lining, I guess?

Halfway through May...

Over halfway through the month, and not even at half of my goal - but that was expected. Poor weather last weekend meant we did not feel inclined to go as far afield as we had wanted. This weekend I am to make up for that. Started the day with a cheeky 8+ km walk around town to enjoy the autumn colours in the morning sun.

Under the mountain

Following on from Friday's climb up Mangere mountain, on Sunday we took the much easier loop around the lagoon.

Making progress!

Yesterday we walked up Mangere mountain, and honestly I think it is one of the unsung destinations in Auckland, I cannot believe we had not made the walk up before. You get such great views of the harbour and north towards the city, and it is much less busy than Mt Eden or One Tree Hill.

Starting small...

Each morning, weather permitting, we walk our daughter up the road to school. I am not including the normal distance that I do as part of that, as to me this challenge is about going beyond the day-to-day. However, after drop-off, we took an extended detour back home, via some of the nearby sleepy streets and leafy avenues.
Not expecting to be able to do this every day, but taking advantage of a nice morning helps to insure against bad weather spoiling other plans down the line!

My Charity Walkathon

Last year I took part in Round The Bays and raised funds for Starship Foundation, which is something very close to us given how often our daughter requires admission to the Starship Children's Hospital (in fact, she is there right now).

It was a great experience, but a lot to do all in one day, and less enjoyable than it could have been due to the sheer number of people. Community events are nice and all, until you are finding it hard to go your own pace, or tripping over all the rubbish strewn across the road from the water stations.

So when I received the email about MyMarathon, this resonated as a much more suitable event to join in on this year, and the Heart Foundation is another pivotal charitable foundation that needs assistance from donations to keep up the work they do.

The intention is to walk at least the 42km of a standard marathon, but across separate days, rather than all at once. Given my usual schedule this likely means walking around 8km in a day 5 times during the month.
However, if I meet the fundraising goal, I will commit to doing an additional marathon equivalent on top, and double the amount of walking to be done!

Support my challenge to save Kiwi hearts

This May, I’m taking part in MyMarathon to raise funds for heart research that will help save lives.

Every 90 minutes, a person dies of heart disease.

Heart disease is the single biggest killer in New Zealand, and I want to do something to support the thousands of Kiwis whose lives are impacted by this disease every single day.

Please make a donation to support my challenge and help save Kiwi hearts.

Together, we can win the race against heart disease.

Thank you!
